Blackpool – St Monica

2 St Monica’s Way, Little Marton, Blackpool FY4 4FA

A functional post-war church, of some interest as a late building by Tom Mellor, with original commissioned artworks.

St Monica was the mother of St Augustine. This church dedicated in her honour was consecrated on 11 May 1973. The architect, Tom Mellor OBE, was coaxed out of Lake District retirement.

The church is built of brick with narrow vertical and top lighting. There are linked parish facilities. As with Tom Mellor’s other church in the diocese (St Bernadette, Lancaster), new art works were created for the building. These include a crucifix of Lakeland stone by Kenneth Carter and an abstract over the tabernacle, designed and given by the architect (information on file at diocesan offices). Not visited.
