Blackburn - St Alban

An ambitious design in a free Decorated Gothic style by Edward Goldie. The church is the fourth on or near the site, replacing buildings of the 1820s, 1780s and 1770s. Goldie’s design for a tower and spire was not realised, but a tower was built in 1960 from designs by Arthur Farebrother & Partners. The interior is little altered, retaining three fine altars and reredoses, communion rails, nave pulpit, baptistery and pews. The nineteenth century Gothic school buildings and early nineteenth century cast iron gate piers add to the interest of the group.

A large modern church built a few years after the Second Vatican Council. The folded roof and its unusual clerestory of glass pyramids give the building a striking silhouette and make it a local landmark. The dedication commemorates the Italian theologian who received Blessed John Henry Newman into the Catholic Church at the nearby College.

Carterton - St Joseph

An L-shaped complex of two former Cotswold barns dating from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, used since the 1930s as a church and hall. The primary heritage significance of the buildings lies in their original use as stone-built agricultural structures, but the current use is sympathetic, retaining the simple and open character of the interiors.
