A simple brick structure of the early 1960s, one of several chapels-of-ease built to serve the post-war suburban expansion of Colchester.
This was one of several chapels-of-ease to St James the Less built to serve the post-war suburban expansion of Colchester. The church was built from designs by George Fordham of O’Neill & Fordham (Chelmsford), and the builders were Messrs Everett of Colchester. The site was acquired at a cost of £200, and the church, seating 180, built at a cost of £7,500. It opened on 11 March 1961.
Description
This is a long, church hall like structure, built of yellow stock brick laid in stretcher bond, with gable ends, overhanging eaves with concealed concrete gutters, and a pantile roof. There is a round arched entrance at the centre of the main frontage with a small arched window opening in the gable above. The remaining openings are flat- headed, with metal windows. At the east end, the sanctuary is lit by two tall narrow lancet windows.
