Huddersfield – English Martyrs

Teddington Avenue, Dalton, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

A modern church of fortress-like appearance, its internal design reflecting the liturgical reforms of the 1960s.

The site for the church, which is located in the Dalton area of Huddersfield, was acquired in 1967. Fr Edward Heeran, formerly parish priest at St Joseph’s Huddersfield, became the first priest of the new parish, and oversaw the construction of the present church, presbytery and parish hall. The architect was John H. Black of Huddersfield and the contractors T. Dyson & Son, of Huddersfield. The completed church was dedicated and opened on 23 April 1970.

Description

The church is a rectangular structure faced with Bronte stone. The main wall surfaces are blind with full-height windows and projecting buttresses groups at the external angles to give the building a fortress-like appearance. The roof is flat and the copper covering is brought  down over the upper  part of the external wall as an ornamental fascia.

The main entrance to the building is by a tunnel-roofed porch. The interior is square on plan, with the altar set in the angle opposite the entrance. The floors are covered with terrazzo tiles, the walls are of bare-faced grey brick and the ceiling is clad in polished pine boarding. To the left of the altar is a Lady Chapel, separated from the main body of the church by a glazed screen. The altar, font and lectern are all original to the church, in white marble. A tall single-light window behind the altar has abstract stained glass.
