Blackburn – Good Shepherd

Northfield Road/Earl Street, Blackburn BB1

A plain building of the 1970s, built as a chapel-of-ease to St Albans.

The church was built as a chapel-of-ease to St Albans (qv), from designs by Campbell & Driver of Richmond Terrace, Blackburn.  It was built on a sloping site, and was designed to be built in three phases: church, community room and presbytery. The first phase (church, designed to seat 250) was completed in April 1967 at a cost of £32,500. The parish hall was added slightly later, infilling the structural frame below the sanctuary end of the church. The church was blessed and opened on 6 December 1968 by Bishop Holland.  The projected presbytery (presumably anticipating a future separate parish) was not built, and the church continues to be served from St Albans. It was consecrated in 1994.

Description

The church is built on a sloping site, with a slightly later parish hall underneath. It is of portal framed construction, clad in yellow (nave) and purple (sanctuary) brick. It is on a tapered plan, with raised copper-clad roof to the sanctuary, which is top lit with clerestory glazing. The nave roof is clad in slate.  There is a large cross on the windowless gable end of the sanctuary.  Inside, the tapering internal space is plain, with the hidden clerestory providing dramatic top lighting to the sanctuary area.
