A post-Vatican II centrally-planned church, built by Lanner of Wakefield to one of their standard designs. 

The parish was founded in 1961. A temporary church was built in 1966 on a site leased from the City Council. When that lease was about to expire, a new site was acquired and a new church with attached presbytery commissioned from Lanner Ltd. The church was opened on 8 September 1981. In 1994, a parish hall was built, in a similar style (architect: John D. Holmes).

Description

The church was built in 1981 to one of the standard designs of Lanner Ltd. It has a pentagonal plan, with the sacristy and the former weekday chapel on either side of the entrance. A narthex links the church to the presbytery and hall. The external walls are faced in brown bricks. The pyramidal roof is tiled and has a small fleche.

The interior frame consists of glue-laminated timber trusses, exposed below the boarded ceiling with several rows of timber purlins. The sanctuary furnishings are of timber. The west doors into the church have sandblasted glass panels by the sculptor Stephen Hines depicting the four evangelists. Due to Lent, all the statues in the church were shrouded.
