A large town centre church convincingly built in East Anglian style by J. J. Scoles for the Jesuits in 1848-50, with some interesting early twentieth century wall paintings and with much stencilling to the panelled ceilings. It is faced in squared black flints, like the adjoining presbytery also by Scoles. With the c.1900 church rooms, this is an important group of buildings in the St George’s Conservation Area.

The history section of the list description (below) gives the essential information. Before the Jesuits started their mission in 1824, the Bedingfield family of Oxburgh Hall had a summer residence in Great Yarmouth, where Mass was said and itinerant priests held occasional Masses in private houses. Fr Tate’s first church survived in the Rows until demolished for council flats in the 1950s.

The present church was built in 1848-50 from designs by J. J. Scoles, a favoured architect of the Jesuits, who had married into a Yarmouth family. The builder was a Mr Griffon (builder and carver) of Cow Hill, Norwich (The Tablet). Scoles intended a lead covered timber spire, but perhaps the difficulties encountered by the tower settling during construction (the site was apparently a rubbish tip) dissuaded him. Bishop Wareing was appointed the first Bishop of Northampton just five days after opening St Mary’s as Vicar Apostolic of the Eastern District and Titular Bishop of Areopolis.

The original priest’s sacristy was behind the high altar, accessed by small doors in the east wall, and the servers’ sacristy was to the south of the southeast Lady Chapel. A confessional was added at the east end of the south aisle. In the late 1890s a priest’s sacristy was built in a link building to the presbytery at the west and the servers’ sacristy was joined to the 1900 church rooms. These also functioned as the dining room and hall for the school built to the south of the church, run by the Sisters of St Mary of Namur until 1983 (now housing). St Mary’s Primary School opened on a new site in 1967. In 1921, the Shrine of Our Lady of Yarmouth was added to the Chapel of Our Lady.

The Jesuits departed in 1962, replaced by seculars until the Augustinians came in 1972. When they left in 1995, the diocese took over again.

In 1978, many statues in the church were vandalised. In March 2018 an arsonist lit small fires and desecrated the altar, necessitating a re-dedication by Bishop Alan Hopes on 31 May 2018.

Description

The list description (below) provides a detailed document, but has some errors and omissions. The following points might be noted:

  • The south nave aisle has a round west window, enclosing an ogee-sided quatrefoil with extensive cusping and small corner quatrefoils.
  • There is a link building with sacristies between the south nave aisle and presbytery of the late 1890s. The original baptistery was possibly here; there is a southwest lean-to, perhaps a confessional.
  • There are two church rooms, probably of different late nineteenth century dates, squeezed into the trapezoidal corner of the site. The smaller eastern room with the steeper roof has a boarded canted ceiling. Although the larger western room has a false ceiling, enough can be seen of the roof beams to suggest it was open to the rafters. Both, like the church, are faced with squared flints with stone details, including a grotesque head with its tongue out on the external corner.
  • The nave is not barrel-vaulted, but has a seven-sided, panelled ceiling between cast-iron transverse arches rising from slender cast-iron wall posts. The panelled pent roofs of the aisles are also boarded with many bosses.
  • Although a few benches have been lost from the front and back, most of the original seating survives, those in the aisles with their original black stain, those in the centre painted a tan colour. The fronts have buttresses and a billeted top rail. The 1850 tracery altar rail now stands at the west end of the central blocks of benches.
  • The Pietà is now in the south nave aisle and the font sits beneath the gallery, with a large crucifix behind it on the west wall. The gallery front has tracery panels and the organ pipes are divided into two cases flanking the west window.
  • The chancel arch has hood-stops, and the early twentieth century wall painting above shows the Coronation of the Virgin.
  • The sanctuary has a ribbed and stencilled ceiling rising from a castellated cornice.
  • The stone high altar has tracery panels and angels, but the reredos has eight standing saints flanking a central niche where the tabernacle was presumably housed.
  • The five-light east window is not as described. The centre light shows Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, flanked by Saints Peter and Paul with St Ignatius and St Francis Xavier in the outer lights. The designer is not known.
  • The sanctuary wall paintings are likely to be early twentieth century, possibly by Archibald Jervis, who painted Our Lady of Great Yarmouth in the Lady Chapel, as both have gilded plaster details. The complex iron screens that fill the arches to both chancel chapels are probably mid-nineteenth century.
  • The stone altar of the Sacred Heart Chapel is painted and the lean-to panelled ceiling painted red with stencilling incorporating the Agnus Dei. The east window glass is late nineteenth century, possibly by Burlison & Grylls, and not ‘of the 1850s by Hardman and Co.’.
  • The large mural in Our Lady’s Chapel (in poor condition) fills the south wall; no painting survives on the east wall. The ceiling is stencilled with crowned Ms and lilies; the stone and marble altar rail is of 1926, as presumably is the mosaic floor.
  • The Mayer (not Mayers) & Co. windows are signed.

The niche shrine of St Mary stands on a short pier decorated with grey marble shafts and was erected to commemorate the founding priest, Fr Lopez in c.1860.

Church

Roman Catholic Church, Perpendicular style with late Decorated features, built 1848-1850 by J J Scoles for the Jesuits. MATERIALS: Knapped flint with limestone ashlar dressings, C20 concrete tiles to the roof. PLAN: Chancel to the east end and a tower to the west, nave and side aisles. Church rooms are added to the south and a presbytery to the west, also by Scoles in the same style. EXTERIOR: The tower to the north-west has four stages with setback buttresses in flushwork. A pointed-arch doorway to the north, on the ground floor, has decorated spandrels framed by a stone hood-mould supported on the carved stone heads of St Edmund King and Martyr and St Augustine. The two-leaf wooden door has decorative strapwork. Above, at the first stage is a recessed niche with a cusped ogee arched head, containing a statue of the Madonna with the Christ-child. A one-light-cusped window is at the west elevation. The second stage has square pierced ventilation panels to the ringing chamber. Two-light belfry windows have tracery and latticed stone infills at the third stage. The polygonal stair turret to the south-west rises to a crocketed pinnacle. The double crenellated parapet has flushwork panel and lozenge decoration and corner pinnacles.
The side aisles under pent roofs have four two-light windows separated with flushwork buttresses, with two more to the Chapel of the Sacred Heart and the Lady Chapel at the east end of the north aisle and south aisles respectively. Above are four clerestory lights of encircled quatrefoils. The east chancel window has five lights also in the Perpendicular style. Attached to the south-west of the chancel are church rooms of 1900, in flint with brick and stone detailing, linked by a covered walkway under a gabled slate roof.

INTERIOR: A stoup beside the main door remains in the porch. Double doors with decorative strapwork lead to the nave which has a barrel vaulted roof with a ceiling stencilled with a sacred heart and foliate motif in red and gold, incorporating 800 carved wooden bosses. A gallery at the west end supports the late C19 organ and choir-loft, beneath which is a freestanding sculpture of Mary cradling the fallen Christ. Arcades of 4 and 5 arches lead to the north and south aisles, supported on octagonal piers with moulded capitals and bases. Some mid C19 pews remain. The chancel at the east end has a moulded chancel arch with engaged columns. A richly carved altar with figures of the Saints is by Scoles. The stained glass of the east window denotes Christ in majesty flanked by the gospels. Wall paintings appear to be of the late C19. Along the west end wall of the nave, continuing along those of the north and south aisles, are panels depicting the Stations of the Cross in relief. At the east end of the north aisle, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart has a mid C19 polished stone altar incorporating a sculpture of the dead Christ flanked by angels. A brass memorial to Father Lythgoe (the parish priest between 1852-1855) by Hardman and Co. is inserted into the tiled floor. At the east end of the south aisle is the Lady Chapel, segregated by delicate cast iron railings. The Chapel has an altar and a mural on the east wall and south walls dated 1921 by Archibald Jarvis depicting Our Lady of Yarmouth supported by scenes of local historic interest; the chapel ceiling is embossed with a motif in blue and gold; the gated altar rails are a memorial to Father Thompson. Two windows in the south and north aisles have stained glass of c 1860 and 1890 attributed to Mayers and Co. The two-light window in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart depicting the death of St Ignatius and St Francis Xavier is of the 1850s by Hardman and Co. The pulpit was probably designed by Pugin and executed by George Myers, the font (by Scoles) and niche shrine of St Mary completing the ensemble; there is no evidence of a rood screen. The church rooms have been remodelled and contain few historic fixtures and fittings.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Surrounding the church and presbytery is a low flint wall with ashlar dressings and piers at intervals.

HISTORY: In 1824, before the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829, the Jesuits started a mission in Great Yarmouth under Father Tate. Tate had purchased a house and warehouse in the old town for Catholic worship, but by 1841 the congregation had outgrown this accommodation and the new priest, Father Lopez, purchased land outside of the town on which the Jesuits would build St Mary’s. Built at a cost of £10,000, the Jesuits commissioned one of their favoured architects Joseph John Scoles (1798-1863) to design and build the church and adjoining presbytery. Scoles had married into a Great Yarmouth family and designed a number of listed buildings in the town including St Peter’s Anglican Church (later St Spiridion’s Greek Orthodox Church) and Britannia Terrace on Marine Parade. The church was opened on September 24th 1850 by Bishop Wareing, with a congregation of 800. It is little altered except for the addition of austere church rooms to the south-east in 1900. Some minor reordering to the sanctuary occurred in 1978 when the altar rails were removed (and re-erected at the rear of the church), the sanctuary floor was raised, the pulpit was lowered and the font moved from the rear of the nave to the north aisle. In the same year, sadly many of the statues were vandalised and restored by local craftsmen. The roof covering to the nave and aisles has been replaced with concrete tiles.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Great Yarmouth, of 1848-50, is listed at Grade II* for the following principal reasons: * Architecture: It is an accomplished piece by the renowned church architect J J Scoles, reminiscent of a medieval parish church, with meticulous detailing. * Materials: The use of good quality knapped flint and contrasting stonework significantly contributes to the more than special interest of the building. * Interior: Most contemporary fixtures and fittings remain including the altar by Scoles, the pulpit (probably by Pugin and executed by George Myers), the figure of the dead Christ in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, stained glass by Hardman and Co and Mayer and Co. and the embossed and stencilled nave ceiling. * Intactness: the historic fabric and layout of the church is little altered. * Comparative Quality: St Mary’s compares favourably with other Grade II* listed churches by Scoles including the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, London (1844-49) and St Francis Xavier, Liverpool (1845-9). * Group Value: The building has group value with the attached presbytery to the west, a Grade II listed building.

Presbytery

A church presbytery of 1848-50 by JJ Scoles. MATERIALS: The presbytery is constructed of knapped flint with stone dressings under slate roofs. PLAN: Rectangular in plan, of three storeys. EXTERIOR: The slightly asymmetrical façade has a projecting bay to the right and a ground floor bay window with parapet to the left. Two projecting gablets on the second floor to the north were added later. All windows are casements with stone surrounds and moulded mullions and are of two or three lights with cusped ogee heads. The rear elevation has a projecting stair turret and added dormer. To the east, a single storey link of knapped flint joins the presbytery with the Church of St Mary to the west. INTERIOR: A very plain interior with a simple staircase and few historic fixtures and fittings remaining.
