A small post-war chapel of ease, of fairly functional design.
From 1942, Mass was said at Ilminster in the Red Cross rooms in Silver Street. The present church was built by Fr O’Brien of Chard (qv). It was opened on 22 April 1953 by Bishop Rudderham. It continues to be served from Chard.
The church faces west. This description uses the liturgical orientation.
The church has a longitudinal plan with a narrower sacristy at the back. The walls are rendered and the roof pantiled. The four two-light windows with stone dressings on the north elevation are interspersed by buttresses. The main architectural feature of the exterior is the large stone horseshoe arch at the west end which frames the recessed entrance. The east window on the north side contains stained glass. The interior has not been inspected.
