Derby (Mickleover) – Our Lady of Lourdes

Uttoxeter Road, Mickleover, Derby DE3

A striking modern church on a polygonal plan, the interior an attractive space.

A combined church and community centre was established in 1962-6 and extended during the 1970s by Montague Associates. The present building was erected in 1981-2. In 2004 the entrance was extended to form a gathering area.

Description

A striking building on an unequal octagonal plan, with a copper-clad roof reaching down on the short sides and a central lantern. The roof shape has been exploited to create clerestory lighting at the angles, which gives th  interior dynamism. The interior has simple bench seating arranged in an arc and simple solid furnishings. The roof is clad with hardwood and the ‘cobweb’ design with the lantern at the centre, combined with the clerestory lighting, contributes to an interesting and engaging space. There is a brightly-coloured dalle de verre west clerestory window showing Christ and the Disciples. The extension takes the form of an angled glazed entrance block with upturned roof with deep eaves. It takes striking form, and provides a well lit, pleasant gathering area, though its assertive design could be seen as competing with that of the original building.
