West Bromwich (Yew Tree Estate) – St Joseph

Birchfield Way, Yew Tree Estate, West Bromwich, Sandwell WS5

A modest late 1950s church-hall built on a low budget for a post-war housing estate.

The first Mass at this church, serving the Yew Tree Estate, was said on 1 March 1959, previous to which it had been offered at the Delves Hotel since 1954. The building was erected as a dual-purpose church and hall, originally served from Bilston; as so often in such cases, the intended permanent church has never been built.

Description

A simple, longitudinally planned church-hall building, faced with golden brown brick and with a shallow pitched felt roof. A flat-roofed entrance porch leads into a five-bay nave and sanctuary plus a sacristy and meeting room. The building is steel framed, with laminated timber trusses to the nave. The fenestration is plain, consisting of rectangular openings. There are no fittings or furnishings that require particular mention.
